Ode to the September Moon

The moon has always held me — steady, renewed, whole. Tonight’s September moon called for more than one expression.

This reflection first arrived as a longer free verse ode, spilling out in detail all the ways her light completes me. From it, a smaller lyrical version emerged, holding the same heart in gentler lines.

To the Moon

O’ moon, you steady all my days,
your silver breath, your gentle gaze.
In every phase, I find my whole,
your light the keeper of my soul.

Ode to the September Moon

Tonight, the September moon rises,
almost full—
distant in the sky,
yet pulsing close enough to move through me,
to vibrate in my chest like breath.

I do not always seek her,
yet when I don’t, I grow ill—
as if my body forgets how to live
without her face.

She is comfort.
She is calmness.
She is devotion.
Every glance fills me with completion—
as though I need nothing more
than her light
and the air around me.

Her beauty is not possession,
not control.
She does not bind me—
she steadies me,
like a trance of love,
a stillness of wonder.

And in every face she wears,
she teaches me to bow in reverence,
to give praise,
to remember
that I am not separate—
I am one with her,
always one.

Mai
